MADE OF SPACE — GABRIELA LOTAIF | Costume Designer & Bodily Garment Artist

Costume Designed for the piece “Made of Space” a third part of a trilogy of performances created by the Barcelona based company GN|MC Guy Nader, Maria Campos. Following the first two pieces, “Time Takes the Time Time Takes” and “Set of Sets”, this third choreographic project discusses the common subject of all three pieces, time, from a different perspective: the space-time dimension. Made of Space premiered at the Grec Festival Barcelona 2021.

As typical of the company’s work, this piece defies physics through each and every movement, scenic element and melodic note. The attempt of the two awarded dancers and choreographers with Made os Space is to conceptually discuss the characteristics of repetitions, infinity and continuousness. This is visually represented by the curves and circles and spirals that define the movements, the tone of the musical structures developed by Miguel Marín, the space itself and the light direction.

Adding to this overall imagery and conceptualisation I aimed for a rather technically made costume, with innovative pattern cutting based in curves and spirals embedded in the creation of all garments. With the objetive of bringing those time-space-continuum elements to the bodies of the dancers, I summoned them as elegant pattern-cut spirals, circles and fractions of these. The colours do also represent an ever-growing cycle of blue-greyish tones that are at times more or less reflective of the light designed by Conchita Pons, giving every dancer they’re individual glow and the whole group a sense of scaling curve of shapes.

For the Teaser the idea was to use costumes that would ambient the dancers with the beautiful space they were dancing in and create, thus, the imagery of space continuation in their bodies, they are all chosen in between a more sporty and a more elegant style, keeping up with the costumes worn by the company’s dancers in their previous works.
